        FAIRE FRIENDS

        SCARBOROUGH 2002

It's always more fun doing faire together with your friends. It's even better when they surprise you by showing up, unexpectedly and unannounced! So it was that -- at Scarby '02 -- I had several pleasant surprises in store!!! First, I got to meet my photographer friends The Stalkwells (AKA Dana and Kim)...again. I'd met them earlier this year at Excalibur, where wind-driven sand had clogged up their long-barrel telephoto lenses; and then again at Four Winds, where it turned out they were the official photographers for that faire. At Scarby, they surprised me by showing up as part of the Spanish Inquisition. It seems I was taking pictures of the Noon Parade when along they came, dressed in red robes and carrying a strange assortment of kitchen utensils and other odds'n ends as "accessories" (Photo, Below). For The Stalkwells, that was not a surprise. Both Dana and Kim have a wonderfully FEY sense of humor, which is one of the reasons I enjoy hanging out with them whenever I can.

By way of example: the dish drainer Kim is wearing is actually a visual pun well in keeping with her Inquisitorial robes. Of course you've heard of THE RACK, haven't you??? And the aviator's helmet the tall fellow at left is wearing? Why, he's a SKY PILOT, naturally enough!!! Unfortunately, I did not find out what all the puns were (for instance, the strainer on Dana's belt is still a mystery to me), but I'm sure there was a rhyme and reason for everything they wore. Alas, when I finally caught up to them outside the gates after the Parade (Photo, Left), they were in the middle of another photo shoot. We weren't able to talk much: the best I could do was "shoot" the photographers, then. Hey, turnabout is faire play, after all!

This was the subject of their photo shoot (Photo, Right). Regretfully, I do not know his name -- but I do know he was trying to look "contemplative" in this pose!

Another pose, another image to add to The Stalkwells' vast archive of Renaissance portraits and images (Photos Above and Below: with Dana, below, helpfully suggesting to the subject where he should focus his attention!). For awhile, the "Inquisitors" were planning an unexpected visit to the "Hey, Nunnie, Nunnie!" show later that same afternoon, but thought better of the idea. They were afraid the good sisters might go into palipations onstage if the Spanish Inquisition suddenly showed up!!!
